Introduction

What is an intranet?
An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols and network connectivity to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees. Sometimes the term refers only to the most visible service, the internal website. Briefly, an intranet can be understood as "a private version of an Internet," or as a version of the Internet confined to an organization. This intranet offers various levels of security access.

What is an extranet?
An extranet is a private network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers or other businesses. An extranet can be viewed as part of a company's Intranet that is extended to users outside the company (e.g.: normally over the Internet). It has also been described as a "state of mind" in which the Internet is perceived as a way to do business with a preapproved set of other companies business-to-business (B2B), in isolation from all other Internet users. In contrast, business-to-consumer (B2C) involves known server(s) of one or more companies, communicating with previously unknown consumer users. Briefly, an extranet can be understood as a private intranet mapped onto the Internet or some other transmission system not accessible to the general public, but is managed by more than one company's administrator(s).

What is a wiki?
A wiki is software that allows users to collaborate and shar information easily. Without this type of software, file sharing is limitied to one-to-one or one-to-everyone sharing.
Chambers is installing this wiki to provide an affordable and effective Intranet and for knowledge management and organization.

Why this wiki?
There are many wikis and Tikiwiki was chosen for the numerous modules available, it’s capability to be personalized for Chambers Communications, it being an open source and a free tool.

What features are immediately available? Why?
For beginning purposes, please familiarize yourself with the structure of this site. You will find several key functions including Files, Calendar, Contacts and My Settings. These are great functions to use to familiarize yourself with the intranet. We chose to limit the list of features we are deploying initially, but many other features can be turned on with 1-2 days notice.

What other features are there?
Wikis, Forums, Blogs, Articles, Image Gallery, Map Server, Bug Tracker, Sales Automation and many more.

Who is managing the system?
Brian Moore - Technical Developer & Software Maintainer
Dave Cole – IT Management
Laura Suter – Administrative Management

When I have a question or comment, who do I send it to?
Laura Suter – lsuter@cmc.net

Can I see everything that is uploaded?
Our intranet allows “permissions” to be placed on files that you upload. You can allow specific groups of people access to certain files and exclude other groups.

How do external people / clients get access to the system and what limits do they have?
Initially, Allegro, Monaco, several key Advertising Agencies, and Feature Film projects will have access to the system.

What departments are using this?
Chambers Productions is the only department currently using the intranet. Once CPC is happy with the tool, we will share it with other departments or companies interested.

What should you list on the calendars?
The calendars should be used to fufill the demands of your department. For CPC, perhaps the calendar serves a more internal purpose since CPC already utilizes Scheduall for client related meetings and production schedules. Paul can decide to list high-level projects. Internal meetings and events can be added to the CPC Calendar. In adding events/meetings to the calendar, you have the ability to designate the date, time, location and attendees as well as other details.
